  • Dr. Shay analyzes, describes, and documents the grammatical systems of endangered and lesser-known languages of the Chadic family, a member of the Afroasiatic language phylum, and uses her research findings to re-examine accepted methodologies and findings in the areas of linguistic typology, linguistic description, and language change.


  • Description and analysis of endangered languages of the Chadic language family, spoken in parts of Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon; analysis of languages of the Afroasiatic phylum, to which the Chadic family belongs; application of research findings to questions concerning language change, linguistic typology, and linguistic theory, especially in the areas of syntax, morphology, and semantics.
