research overview

  • Dr. Munkhoff's research focuses on the history of public health before the 19th century. She is just completing a project on the role of poor women in determining cause of death and keeping vital statistics across the long early modern period (1570-1840). She is also working on a project that examines the material and cultural transformation of charitable health care for the poor, orphaned, disabled and infirm across the sixteenth century, and particularly traces the role of literature in reimagining the terms of Christian charity to be increasingly associated with governmental responsibility.
