Dr. Laura Hamman-Ortiz is an educational linguist who specializes in two-way bilingual education, classroom discourse analysis, and translanguaging theory. She has several lines of inquiry that consider the relationship between language and education in K-12 classrooms: (1) the discursive construction of ideologies and identities in two-way bilingual spaces; (2) the impact of a genre-based approach to teaching writing in bilingual contexts; (3) the role of translanguaging in supporting students’ bilingualism and biliteracy; and (4) the preparation of pre-service and in-service educators to serve culturally & linguistically diverse learners. Laura's current project explores the impact of a systemic functional linguistics approach to teaching writing in bilingual classrooms.
