  • Dr. Laura Hamman-Ortiz is an educational linguist who specializes in two-way bilingual education, classroom discourse analysis, and translanguaging theory. She has several lines of inquiry that consider the relationship between language and education in K-12 classrooms: (1) the discursive construction of ideologies and identities in two-way bilingual spaces; (2) the impact of a genre-based approach to teaching writing in bilingual contexts; (3) the role of translanguaging in supporting students’ bilingualism and biliteracy; and (4) the preparation of pre-service and in-service educators to serve culturally & linguistically diverse learners. Laura's current project explores the impact of a systemic functional linguistics approach to teaching writing in bilingual classrooms.

    Addresses special topics in arts and humanities with an emphasis on building conceptual understanding of content and enhancing teacher's practice in teaching this content.
