research overview

  • Dr. Stodieck studies the effects of the space flight environment, particularly microgravity, on the musculoskeletal system. Muscle and bone loss are significant concerns for astronauts exposed to long-duration unloading and disuse associated with space flight. Dr. Stodieck is especially interested in the molecular mechanisms that cause muscle atrophy and in identifying and testing countermeasures that could mitigate muscle loss in space. He also collaborates with and supports a variety of investigations performed in space in such areas as microbiology, cell and tissue culture and K-16 science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
