  • José Ramón Lizárraga is a learning scientist and information sciences scholar who uses ethnographic, video, and multimodal research methods to investigate the role of social networks, television, artificial intelligence and other information and communications technologies in teacher education and the learning of non-dominant populations. Currently, their work examines the collaborative practices of novice teachers and adolescents at the intersection of virtual and in-person terrains of practice. As part of their design-based research, Dr. Lizárraga is a designer and instructor of hybrid/blended (online/in-person) and online undergraduate education courses as well as credential courses.

    Integrates theories and ideas from elementary school child development, educational psychology and the learning sciences. Explores theories of learning and child development and considers implications for teaching, student engagement and the design of equitable and effective learning environments. Students are required to attend a practicum off-site for this class.

    This course integrates theories and ideas from human development, educational psychology, and the learning sciences.     Examines current theory and research on adolescent development, learning, motivation, and academic achievement. Emphasizes how theory and research can inform instructional decisions in the secondary classroom.
  • EDUC 8348 - Seminar: Human Development
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2020
    Intensive study of selected topics in human development. The focus of the seminar will vary depending on the instructor's expertise and students' interests. Recent topics include adolescent development in social context, Vygotsky and Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, and design-based research methods. Repeatable for credit up to 6 total credit hours. Recommended prerequisite: EDUC 6318 or EDUC 8210 or instructor consent.
  • GRTE 5010 - Graduate Humanities for Teachers
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2020
    Addresses special topics in arts and humanities with an emphasis on building conceptual understanding of content and enhancing teacher's practice in teaching this content.
