Barnes, Hannah C

Research Associate

research overview

  • Dr. Hannah C Barnes is an expert in tropical convection, convective parameterizations, and radar observations. Her current research focuses on the development of the Grell-Freitas Convective Parameterization. A convective parameterization is one of the parts of a weather model that describes how clouds and the environment interact. Dr. Barnes' work has improved how convective parameterizations interact with other components of weather models and how aerosols are treated in convective parameterizations. Additional research activities done by Dr. Barnes includes supporting other model physics developers by creating model validation scripts. She is interested in developing new ways to use observations to help validate weather models. Hannah's previous research focused on using radar observations to understand convection. As part of her observational research, Hannah participated as a radar scientist in two field campaigns.

  • convective parameterization, dual-polarimetric radars, mesoscale convective systems
