research overview

  • The unifying theme of Dr. Resasco's research is to understand how human stressors to the environment affect biodiversity and how to mitigate those impacts. These stressors include changes to landscapes, climate change, and species introductions. He often studies spatial and temporal dynamics and uses field studies at large spatial and long temporal scales to test theory and link ecological pattern with process. Areas of research include landscape connectivity/corridors, habitat fragmentation, plant-pollinator networks, insect community ecology, stable isotope ecology, and conservation biology. He works on a variety of taxa but has a particular fondness for insects. Settings of field work include the longleaf pine ecosystem of the southeastern US and forests and meadows of the Rocky Mountains.

  • EBIO 3990 - EBIO Honors Thesis Research
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023
    Provides an introduction to the departmental Honors program. Consists of individual library research on a potential Honors thesis topic under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Recommended prerequisites: minimum 3.2 GPA and approval by departmental honors committee.
  • EBIO 4060 - Landscape Ecology
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019 / Fall 2020 / Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
    Studies distributional patterns of communities and ecosystems, ecological processes that affect those patterns, and changes in pattern and process over time. Consideration of spatial and temporal scales in ecological analyses is required to understand and predict response to broad-scale environmental change. Recommended prerequisites: EBIO 1210 and EBIO 1220 and EBIO 1230 and EBIO 1240 and EBIO 2040 or EBIO 2640 (minimum grade C-). Same as EBIO 5060.
  • EBIO 4460 - Special Topics
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2021
    Familiarizes students with specialized areas of biology. May be repeated up to 15 total credit hours. Recommended prerequisites: EBIO 1210 and EBIO 1220 and EBIO 1230 and EBIO 1240 (minimum grade C-). Same as EBIO 5460.
  • EBIO 4660 - Insect Biology
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2022 / Fall 2023
    Lect. and lab. Introduction to evolution, ecology, physiology, and behavior of insects. Emphasizes how insects have solved problems, such as maintaining water balance or finding food, that are shared by all animals but for which there may be unique solutions among the insects. Agricultural and human health problems relative to entomology are discussed. Uses animals and/or animal tissues. Recommended prerequisites: EBIO 1210 and EBIO 1220 and EBIO 1230 and EBIO 1240 (minimum grade C-). Same as EBIO 5660.
  • EBIO 4800 - Critical Thinking in Biology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2020
    Lect. and discussion. Explores controversial issues, historical themes, or emerging developments in biology. Consult the EBIO Undergraduate Advising Center for current listings. May be repeated up to 15 total credit hours. Recommended prerequisite: minimum of 14 hours of EBIO course work. Same as EBIO 5800.
  • EBIO 4990 - EBIO Honors Thesis Research
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2024
    To be taken during the final academic year prior to graduation. Consists of the final phase of honors research and thesis preparation under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Recommended prerequisites: minimum 3.3 GPA and a declared EBIO major and approval by departmental Honors program.
