  • Marcos Davi Silva Steuernagel works at the intersection of performance and politics, Brazilian and Latin American theatre and performance, and the digital humanities. He is co-editor with Diana Taylor of the multilingual digital books What is Performance Studies? (Duke University Press; HemiPress, 2015) and Resistant Strategies (HemiPress, 2021), and has published essays in TDR: The Drama Review, Latin American Theatre Review, and the Journal of Global South Studies, has conducted extensive fieldwork in Brazil and in Southern Mexico, and has chaired transnational and multilingual panels in English, Portuguese, and Spanish with scholars from across the Americas. He is currently working on a monograph that traces the intrinsic relationship between politics, performance, and cultural funding throughout the rise and fall of the Workers’ Party era in Brazil (2002-2016).

    Enhances students' knowledge and appreciation of the humanities. Readings, discussions, cooperative learning exercises, workshopping papers and presentation, guest speakers, and outside activities are designed to enhance both students' appreciation of the subject matter and their performance in their regular courses. Emphasis is on actively using knowledge of humanities in a variety of ways. Department consent required. May be repeated up to 4 total credit hours.

  • THDN 5010 - Introduction to Performance Studies

    Introduces students to performance studies by surveying foundational concepts and recent scholarship in the field and by examining theoretical and methodological questions raised by performance practices. This interdisciplinary course provides students with the necessary vocabulary and research skills to continue to navigate the field of performance studies and the many academic fields it intersects with. Formerly THTR 5010.
  • THDN 6009 - Research and Teaching in Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies

    Provides an overview of resources, methodologies, and strategies for graduate teaching in the fields of theatre, dance, and performance studies. Students will be exposed to library and other resources available to them in the department and in the university, and will develop a research proposal for a project they plan to develop during their graduate studies.

    Explores the dramatic literature, performance traditions and cultural contexts in world theatre from 1600s to the present, through discussion, writing and theatre practice, with an emphasis on the impacts of modernity and colonialism.

    Explores global theatre from the early 1960s to the present, with particular attention towards balancing the avant garde and popular theatre in recent world drama.
