Professor Kent specializes in modern British history, focusing on gender, culture, imperialism, and politics. Among her eight books in print are Sex and Suffrage in Britain, 1860–1914; Making Peace: The Reconstruction of Gender in Interwar Britain; Gender and Politics in Britain, 1640–1990; a co-authored book on The Women’s War of 1929; and Aftershocks: The Politics of Trauma in Interwar Britain. Four other books are in press. A colleague described Professor Kent’s scholarship as being energetic and erudite, combining stylistic flair with a range of knowledge that encompasses a biography of Queen Victoria, gender and power in modern Britain, the global influenza pandemic of 1918–19, colonial Nigeria in African history, and ecological and environmental history. A member of the faculty since 1993, Professor Kent has been honored nationally for her work, including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1993–94. She was a visiting scholar at the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University that same year. In 2009, Professor Kent received honorable mention for the Kayden Book Award for Aftershocks.
