Intensive introduction to world film history from its emergence in 1895 through the transition to sound, and up to 1959. Topics include the earliest single-shot films of the Lumiere brothers , the development of film narrative, French Impressionism, German Expressionism, Soviet montage, American silent comedy, Hollywood's classical studio era, italian neorealism, and postwar "art house" cinema, and major trends in in experimental and documentary filmmaking.
