Explores major topics in the history of Ukraine, including the impact of Russian imperialism, Ukrainian nationalism, the legacy of Soviet rule, the Second World War, and Ukraine�s struggle for sovereignty, with a particular emphasis on periods in Ukrainian history that remain relevant and debated today. Over the course of the semester, we will also discuss the question of historical and cultural memory, diving into questions about the uses (and abuses) of the past. Recommended prerequisite: HIST 1012, HIST 2100, HIST 4723, or HIST 4733.
