Undergraduate Geoscience Education in Environmental and Water Sciences Chapter uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • Abstract; ; The landscape of undergraduate geoscience education in the United States is changing, and existing research supports a shift in educational practices away from traditional lecture toward more active learning. Translating the general best practice of active learning into domainā€specific instruction (e.g. environmental and water sciences domains) remains a challenge. Findings from emerging areas of undergraduate geoscience education research and geocognition research can help to meet this challenge. In the meantime, instructors of undergraduate environmental and water sciences courses can access several repositories for class activities and assessments. These include the; Journal for Geoscience Education; ,; Digital Library for Earth System Education; ,; Science Education Resource Center; ,; On the Cutting Edge: Strong Undergraduate Geoscience Teaching; , and; Teaching about Earth for a Sustainable Future; . These resources can help advance individual geoscience instructor efforts to transform their courses and, thereby, transform the landscape of undergraduate geoscience education.;
