abstract
This study explores the three dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and investigates their relationship to actual turnover in a hospital. Employees who left had significantly higher burnout on all three dimensions than those who stayed with the organization but only two of these dimensions, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment, were significantly related to whether the departure was voluntary or involuntary. Interestingly, the employees who left voluntarily had higher emotional exhaustion scores and lower sense of personal accomplishment than those who were terminated.
