  • This paper reviews existing and accepted theories of retail institution growth and develop ment, and incorporates them into the construction of an improved conceptual framework that adequately explains the evolution of retailing institutions. The framework emphasizes the role of environmental factors and highlights the potential contributions of functionalism, conflict theory, and the notions of evolution and adaptation.
