abstract

  • An FG5 absolute gravimeter, which measures the gravitational acceleration of a retroreflector falling freely within an evacuated tube, is now available for use by U.S. university investigators. It will be housed as a National Science Foundation facility at NOAA's Table Mountain Gravity Observatory of the Geosciences Laboratory in Boulder, where similar units are prepared for worldwide deployment.U.S. investigators are invited to apply the FG5 gravimeter to geophysical investigations of gravitational acceleration that require microgal accuracy and unequivocal long‐term stability. The instrument is expected to be used in more than a dozen projects each year. Funding for geophysical applications of the device will be subject to normal peer review processes; in case of scheduling conflicts, the allocation of time on the gravimeter will be refereed by a user committee.
