  • After earning her doctorate in space physics from the University of Umea, Sweden, Laila Andersson began her career at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna. In 2000, she came to LASP as a post-doc to join the Space Plasma Research Group and to work on data analysis for the Fast Auroral Snapshot Explorer (FAST) mission studying Earth’s aurora, electric fields and electron acceleration. She studies space plasma, ionosphere and thermosphere dynamics of Earth and Mars, electric and magnetic fields, and the aurora.
    Her mission involvement at LASP has included analyzing spacecraft ion data for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program. She was co-investigator of the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, serving as part of the LASP team that developed instruments for the MMS FIELDS investigation. For that, LASP contributed components for the spin-plane double probe and booms, sensor for the axial double probe, and electronics to capture electric and magnetic field measurements. She was co-investigator for the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD); co-investigator for the MAVEN mission, which included serving as the Langmuir Probes and Waves instrument scientist; and she worked on the POLAR Toroidal Imaging Mass-Angle Spectrograph (TIMAS) to study solar wind interactions with Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere, and creation of the aurora.
