World Language Policies provides an introduction to language rights, language policies, and language planning from a national and international perspective. The course will cover areas such as the legal status of languages and language rights; the interrelations between globalization, nationalism, ethnicity, identity and language policy; linguistic ecology; multilingualism as a problem or resource, as well as issues related to Indigenous and minority languages and endangerment. We will examine a number of case studies of language policy implementation, both historical and current, through the lens of different theoretical frameworks.
