  • Surveys the history of science up to Newton, tracing the emergence of scientific thinking from religious and philosophical roots in the Near East and Greece to its development in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, culminating with Newton and the seventeenth-century Scientific Revolution. Additional topics may include early discoveries concerning mathematics; technological advancement and its relation to the evolution of'scientific'theory; and cross-cultural comparisons of'scientific and technological traditions (e.g., Chinese traditions). Recommended prerequisite: 6 hours of philosophy coursework.
