  • HIST 1018 - Introduction to Early Latin American History to 1810
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2019
    Introduces students to the history of what is now called Latin America from about 1450 to the wars of independence in the nineteenth century. Examines pertinent aspects of the societies and cultures of indigenous people, the history of European conquest, and the most salient features of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires in America.
  • HIST 1800 - Introduction to Global History
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018
    Applies a broad perspective to the global past in order to illuminate how common historical patterns and processes as well as unique elements shaped the human experience. Using a thematic approach, introduces highlights cross-cultural interactions among societies, and, when relevant, how historical processes that began centuries ago still impact the contemporary world. Topic will vary by semester. Department enforced prerequisite: 3 hours of any history coursework.
  • HIST 3020 - Historical Thinking & Writing
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019
    Develops the research techniques and habits of mind required to succeed in the History major, honing students' critical, analytical, and synthetic skills while introducing them to History as a discipline and a way of understanding the world. Students practice the kinds of writing required in upper-division History classes. Topics will vary. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours.
  • HIST 4018 - Aztecs, Incas, and the Spanish Conquest of the Americas
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2020
    Building upon contemporary texts and modern histories of both famous and ordinary people, this course examines the indigenous empires known as the Aztecs and the Incas. It also examines the encounter of Europeans and native people, following the history of exploration and conquest from the time of Columbus to about 1550. Equal consideration is given to the course's three components: Aztec, Inca and the Spanish conquest. Recommended prerequisite: HIST 1018 or HIST 3020.
