research overview
- One strand of my research examines how political power and financial capital enable elite white men to mobilize racial stereotypes and moral tropes that absolve them of legal responsibility for their criminal transgressions. Another strand of my research draws together debates about public security, human rights, and social exclusion to examine specific acts of violence involving poor Black Brazilian youths—as victims and as perpetrators. A third strand of my research examines popular cultural representations of imprisonment through a multi-modal research project developed in conjunction with men incarcerated in the United States and in the UK. A fourth strand of my research examines social and legal responses to sexual violence in Brazil and the United States.
