Research

research overview

  • Lorraine Bayard de Volo's research focuses upon gender and violence. In addition to sexual harassment and assault, she examines militarization, political violence, and war and how these are gendered. She currently works on Cuba and the missile crisis (1962). Her past work has examined how states and nonstate militaries (such as guerrillas and paramilitaries) appeal to women and men for support and mobilize them as citizens and combatants. Based upon grants she received from the National Science Foundation and the United States Institute of Peace, she is working on a comparative research project on women, war, and peace processes in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Her book Women and the Cuban Insurrection: How Gender Shaped Castro's Victory (2018) is based on this research. She also conducts gender analyses of asylum cases and the U.S. military and security policy, including sexual harassment and assault in the military and militarized drone technology.
