Dr. Meyers-Denman's research is focused on improving language treatment for children with developmental language disorders. One way to improve language treatment is to consider research on how to facilitate learning. For example, language learning has been demonstrated to improve based on the inclusion of learning principles. Some of these learning principles include: incorporating variability in training procedures, providing the appropriate level of complexity in the input from which the learner learns, and spacing learning appropriately over time in order to generate the greatest benefit to learning. Several early-stage studies in speech-language therapy demonstrate that the incorporation of these principles in a therapy context benefits learning by children with language-based disabilities or disorders. Thus, the core of Dr. Meyers-Denman's research program is to examine the language learning outcomes associated with implementing therapies that incorporate learning principles.
