Swanson is an active guest conductor, a presenter at national conferences hosted by American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO), and has been published in The Choral Journal. Her dissertation was a qualitative analysis of 'August 4, 1964', an oratorio by the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky, with original libretto by Gene Scheer. Swanson served as Secretary on the Executive Board of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (2016–2017) and was deeply involved in the architecture and execution of NCCO's robust biennial national conference (November 2017, Louisiana State University). Swanson has served as an Associate Editor for The Choral Scholar (NCCO's Online Journal) for several years. Swanson is also committed to musicians' wellness; her research interests also include complementary medical practices that incorporate mindfulness and mediation.
