Research

research overview

  • I am an earth scientist, geologist, volcanologist, geochemist, petrologist and geoarcheologist. My research and teaching concern how magmas and volcanoes are formed, how they evolve and reveal the chemistry of Earth's interior; the role of volcanism in the chemical evolution of Earth and other planets; the relations between volcanism and global tectonics; the role of magmatic activity in generation of ore deposits; hazards associated with volcanism; and the characteristics, sources and regional distribution of volcanic rocks found in archaeological sites.

courses taught

  • GEOL 3020 - Petrology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2021
Studies field relations, petrography, petrology, chemistry, and origins of igneous and metamorphic rocks by means of lectures, reading, and lab and field experience. Labs include instruction in the fundamentals of optical petrography and the study of rocks in thin section.
  • GEOL 4711 - Igneous and Metamorphic Field Geology
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019
Applies field techniques to interpretation of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Field exercises and lectures focus on collecting data required to map igneous and metamorphic rock units.
  • GEOL 5711 - Igneous and Metamorphic Field Geology
