research overview

  • My research goal is to better understand human learning by characterizing the structure of input data in children's early learning environment, the processes and mechanisms through which children learn from this data, and how this learning creates hidden deficits or competencies for later school learning. To that end, my lab combines large-scale cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, training experiments, computational modeling, high-density behavioral data collection (e.g., eye tracking), and translational research in schools.

  • PSYC 4145 - Advanced Cognitive Psychology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2021 / Fall 2021 / Spring 2024
    Advanced course in human cognitive processes. Covers key aspects of cognition, such as perception, attention, learning, memory, language and thinking. Discusses major theories and ideas in terms of the research they have inspired. Emphasis varies with instructor. One lab per week and a research project is required. Same as PSYC 5145.
  • PSYC 5665 - Perception and Attention Proseminar
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023
    Required proseminar for students in the Cognitive Psychology Ph.D. program. Provides an introduction to current thinking about sensory and perceptual processing, object recognition and attention. Students will read peer-reviewed journal articles and make class presentations on appropriate topics, including methods of data collection and analysis. Graduate students in all programs are welcome with instructor consent and advanced undergraduates are welcome with instructor consent. May be repeated up to 4 total credit hours.
  • PSYC 5685 - Research Methods Proseminar
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2021 / Fall 2023
    Main topic is research methods in cognitive psychology, with an emphasis on experimental methods. Skills and knowledge will be gained that are necessary to A) critically evaluate existing research and B) design, conduct, analyze and write up experimental studies. Required for graduate students in Cognitive Psychology. Graduate students in all programs are welcome with instructor consent and advanced undergraduates are welcome with instructor consent. May be repeated up to 4 total credit hours.
  • PSYC 6951 - Master's Thesis
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2023
