Dr.Hauser's research focuses on the history of rhetorical theory, the role of rhetoric in a democracy, dissident rhetoric, and the interaction between formal and vernacular rhetorics in the public sphere. His historical research has included studies of rhetorical theory in Greek antiquity, British and Scottish Enlightenment, and the 20th century. His theoretical and critical work dealing with the rhetorical formation of publics and civil society includes development of the reticulate model of public spheres, the vernacular rhetoric model of public opinion, and developing, with his graduate students, the integration of ethnographic and critical methods for studying vernacular discourse.
