  • FREN 1010 - Beginning French 1

    For students with no previous knowledge of French. Introduces students to French grammar, common vocabulary, and the diversity of Francophone culture. Students are encouraged to take FREN 1010 and FREN 1020 OR FREN 1050. FREN 1010 and FREN 1020 are required prior to taking FREN 2110.
  • FREN 1020 - Beginning French 2
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2021 / Spring 2022 / Spring 2023 / Fall 2023 / Spring 2024 / Fall 2025
    Continuation of FREN 1010. Completes students' introduction to core French grammar and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to take FREN 1010 and FREN 1020 OR FREN 1050. FREN 1010 and FREN 1020 are required prior to taking FREN 2110.
  • FREN 1050 - Beginning French Review
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2021 / Fall 2022
    Covers the material of FREN 1010 and 1020 in one accelerated semester. Intended for students who know some French (i.e., four to five semesters in high school) but do not have skills adequate for 2000-level courses. Instructors enforce prerequisites: 2 years of high school French. Degree credit not granted for this course and FREN 1010 or FREN 1020.
  • FREN 2110 - Second-Year French Grammar Review and Reading 1
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2024
    A film based curriculum will expand the knowledge of francophone culture and will continue the development of communication skills begun in the first year. This third semester course will review essential beginning grammar before introducing intermediate structures, vocabulary, and cultural/literary texts.
  • FREN 2120 - Second-Year French Grammar Review and Reading 2
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2018 / Fall 2018 / Spring 2023
    Completes the film-based study of intermediate grammar begun in FREN 2110. Continued reading in French literature and culture, with considerable practice in writing and speaking French. Fulfills the Graduate School language requirement for the Ph.D.
  • FREN 3050 - French Composition
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018
    Develops advanced French writing skills through practice in multiple genres, structured revision, and analytical engagement with short literary and cultural texts. Emphasizes grammatical accuracy, stylistic refinement, and critical thinking. Taught in French. FREN 3050 is one of three Advanced French course options of which French majors and minors must successfully complete two.
  • FREN 3060 - French Composition 2
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019
    French third year level composition course. Students build on their previous knowledge of formal writing in French and more emphasis is given to argumentative and analytical style of writing. This course or FREN 3050 is required for all French majors.
  • FREN 3100 - Introduction to Critical Reading and Writing in French Literature

    An exploration of important moments in French culture and history as represented in major works of fiction, poetry, and drama. Emphasis on refining critical thought through compositions and oral expression in French. Taught in French. FREN 3100 is one of three Advanced French course options of which French majors and minors must successfully complete two.
  • FREN 3600 - Business French 1

    Gives students the tools needed to function in a French-speaking work environment. A culminating project involves creating a business in a francophone country. Taught in French.

    Familiarizes students with current methodology and techniques in foreign language teaching.
  • LGTC 5045 - Language Teacher Proficiency Through Telecollaboration
    Primary Instructor - Summer 2020
    Requires that students conduct a total of 10, 30-minute long virtual immersions (through a video conferencing tool) with a language partner. Students will receive assistance to find a partner. Can be repeated for a total of 2 credit hours for certificate students.
