  • Kalpana Subramanian (Ph.D. University at Buffalo, State University of New York) is an artist, filmmaker, and scholar interested in transcultural and interdisciplinary approaches to film and media. Over the course of her career she has produced a diverse body of work spanning film and video art, photography, interactive media and music. Her recent work investigates experimental cinema through perspectives of embodiment and art from the Global South.

  • ARTF 5604 - Colloquium in Film Aesthetics
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2025
    Seminar for the serious round table discussion and critique of film as an art form, emphasizing development of appropriate verbal and written language skills for description of film. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours. Same as FILM 4604.
  • CINE 2500 - Moving Image Foundations II
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2025 / Fall 2025 / Spring 2026
    Instructs students in developing a technical and aesthetic understanding of complex camera, lighting, sound, and editing moving image production.� Students will explore interpretive cinematography, sound design and mixing, preproduction workflows, and move deeper into the mechanics of editing through individual projects and in-class workshops. Formerly FILM 2500.
  • CINE 3940 - Cinema Studies Internship
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2026
    Provides students with professional internship experiences with film, video, new media production companies, governmental agencies, production units, audio recording studios and new media industries. Students will be responsible for securing their own internship position. May be repeated up to 9 credit hours. Recommended prerequisite: CU GPA of at least 2.00 and upper-division standing and a 3.00 GPA as a BA or BFA Cinema Studies major. Formerly FILM 3940.
  • CINE 4010 - Topics in Film Production
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2025
    Prepares students for advanced Cinema Studies production courses. Subject matter varies each semester. May be repeated up to 9 total credit hours, provided the topics are different. Same as ARTF 5010. Formerly FILM 4010.
  • CINE 4500 - Cinema Production 2
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2026
    Advanced exploration of creative cinema production through short production and post-production projects. Course focuses on the tactics and strategies of independent cinema production leading to the completion of a BFA thesis project exploring either documentary, experimental, or narrative genres. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours. Formerly FILM 4500. Same as ARTF 5500.
  • CINE 4604 - Colloquium in Film Aesthetics
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2025
    Seminar for the serious round table discussion and critique of film as an art form, emphasizing development of appropriate verbal and written language skills for description of film. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours. Department enforced prerequisite: restricted to students with 57-180 credits (Juniors or Seniors) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or instructor consent required.
