I'm a Spanish applied linguist who researches language and identity, second and heritage language development and education, and critical pedagogies. In general, my research explores the following questions: (1) How do the identities of heritage speakers and additional language learners influence their Spanish learning? In turn, how does the act of learning a language across different contexts (e.g., classroom, study abroad, community-engaged learning) influence their identities, attitudes, and perceptions? (2) What does it mean to be 'proficient' in another language? What contributes to language learners sounding more or less 'fluent'? (3) What ideologies are reproduced in Spanish language pedagogy in the U.S.? What are counter pedagogical and curricular approaches?
