  • Associate Professor Steve Lamos studies the history and evolution of writing instruction within the U.S. academy. His first book, _Interests and Opportunities: Race, Racism, and University Writing Instruction in the Post-Civil Rights Era_ (Pittsburgh UP, 2011), analyzed issues of race and racism within the history of “basic writing” instruction. His current book project examines issues of rhythm and resonance as they relate to academic writing and musical composition.

  • WRTG 1150 - First-Year Writing and Rhetoric
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Summer 2020
    Rhetorically informed introduction to college writing. Focuses on critical analysis, argument, inquiry and information literacy. Taught as a writing workshop, the course places a premium on invention, drafting and thoughtful revision. For placement criteria, see the arts and sciences advising office. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours.
  • WRTG 1160 - CMCI First-Year Writing and Rhetoric
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2020 / Spring 2021 / Fall 2023
    Rhetorically informed introduction to college writing for CMCI students enrolled in CMCI 1010 or CMCI 1020. Focuses on critical analysis, argument, inquiry, and information literacy. Taught as a writing workshop, the course places a premium on invention, drafting, and thoughtful revision.
  • WRTG 3020 - Topics in Writing
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
    Through sustained inquiry into a selected topic or issue, students will practice advanced forms of academic writing. Emphasizes analysis, criticism and argument. Taught as a writing workshop, places a premium on substantive, thoughtful revision. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours. Department enforced prerequisite: WRTG 1150 or equivalent (completion of lower-division writing requirement).
  • WRTG 3030 - Writing on Science and Society
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2021 / Spring 2022
    Through selected reading and writing assignments, students consider ethical and social ramifications of science policy and practice. Focuses on critical thinking, analytical writing, and oral presentation. Taught as a writing workshop, the course addresses communication with professional and non-technical audiences. May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours.
  • WRTG 5050 - Graduate Studies in Writing and Rhetoric
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2022
    Special topics and methods course in composition theory, research and pedagogy. Topics vary by semester. May be repeated up to 9 total credit hours.
