Dr. Van Vuuren develops computational methods and technologies to model, study and enhance human and human-machine interaction. Collaborating with other researchers nationally and internationally, this includes design and development of cloud-based web and mobile systems in which virtual clinicians guide learning and communication, and use of these systems to study, optimize, and modulate with high fidelity, engineering, clinical, and cognitive factors affecting outcomes for people with neurologic and communication disorders. His work ranges from basic research to commercial application, combining advances from a broad array of fields including machine learning, computer graphics, data analytics, neural networks, speech processing, web and mobile services, speech and language therapy, audiology, and clinical practice.
