Research

research overview

  • My research group currently has two paths of inquiry, one related to our group's ability to measure and characterize air quality and the associated impacts, and one focused on technology adoption and uptake in the developing world. We are engaged in the collection and characterization of airborne particulate matter (PM) followed by the subsequent use of the measurements to drive epidemiological research; we are trying to understand which sources of PM are causing the mortality and morbidity. As part of that activity, we are characterizing emissions from specific source types, wildfires, & open waste burning. A second path of inquiry involves developing the next generation of tools that can be used to assess exposure to harmful air pollutants. Over the past decade, we have had a proliferation of projects spin out of our initial NSF MAQS effort. This path now includes projects that involve technology adoption in the Sahel of Africa as well as projects that engage citizen scientists.

    -
  • MCEN 2023 - Statics and Structures
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2020 / Fall 2021 / Spring 2022 / Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
Covers statics of particles, equivalent force systems, rigid bodies, equilibrium of rigid bodies in two and three dimensions, analysis of truss and frame structures, uniaxially-loaded members, distributed force systems and friction. Degree credit not granted for this course and CVEN 2121 or GEEN 2851.
  • MCEN 4131 - Air Pollution Control Engineering
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023 / Fall 2023
Introduces air quality regulations, meteorology and modeling. Examines methods for controlling major classes of air pollutants, including particulate matter and oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, as well as control technology for industrial sources and motor vehicles. Requires interdisciplinary design projects. Same as MCEN 5131.
  • MCEN 4228 - Special Topics in Mechanical Engineering
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019 / Spring 2020 / Spring 2021 / Fall 2021 / Spring 2022 / Fall 2022
Subject matter to be selected from topics of current interest. May be repeated up to 15 credit hours. Same as MCEN 5228.
  • MCEN 4291 - Project Based Learning in Rural Schools
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023 / Fall 2023 / Spring 2024
Focuses on the use of low cost air quality monitoring tools, dubbed Pods, to implement PBL curriculum in high school environmental science classes in rural communities in Colorado. Each student will be paired with a high school class and will serve as curriculum and technology advisors as well as science experts. During the fall semester, students will be trained to effectively work in those roles and will also travel to their schools to be introduced. During the spring semester, students will support high school teachers in implementing an existing PBL air quality curriculum with the Pods. This will include monthly visits to schools in the spring and reporting back to the class. Approved for Environmental Option. Enrollment during Fall is required for enrollment during Spring. Previously offered as a special topics course. May be repeated up to 4 total credit hours. Same as MCEN 5291.
