Research

research overview

  • Dr. McKnight's research focuses on the interactions between water quality and the aquatic ecology of algae and other aquatic organisms in lakes and streams. An important aspect of her work is understanding the biogeochemical processes controlling the chemistry of natural organic material and trace metals in freshwater systems. Her field research is conducted in alpine and polar environments, including the Colorado Mineral Belt and the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

keywords

  • aquatic chemistry and aquatic ecology, reactive solute transport in streams and rivers, hydrology

Teaching

courses taught

  • CVEN 3434 - Introduction to Applied Ecology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Spring 2021 / Spring 2022 / Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
Emphasizes the integration of physical, chemical and biological processes in controlling terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Ecosystem concepts are applied to current environmental and water quality problems. Includes field trips and a group project. Same as ENVS 3434.
  • CVEN 5323 - Applied Stream Ecology
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2018 / Fall 2019 / Fall 2020 / Fall 2022 / Fall 2023 / Fall 2024
Emphasizes the integration of hydrologic, chemical, and biological processes in controlling river, stream, and reservoir ecosystems at several spatial scales. Students apply ecosystem concepts to current environmental and water quality problems and learn field methods in field trips and a team project.
