  • Plant Physiological Ecology: We comprehensively address the ecology, physiology, anatomy, and transcriptomics of plants. A unifying theme and focus of our studies are the mechanisms of how plants survive and are productive in different environments, including challenging environmental conditions on Earth and in space. We compare and contrast these characteristics among plant species with different growth patterns as well as anatomical/morphological and physiological features. We currently use the small, highly productive, and uniquely protein-rich plant duckweed as a model aquatic plant to design specific environmental conditions that maximize growth and nutritional quality, and minimize environmental footprint. We are currently developing duckweed as a novel food/energy system for multiple applications, including vertical farms and space flight.

    Lect. Provides a concentrated introduction to molecular, cellular, genetic, and evolutionary biology. Emphasizes fundamental principles, concepts, facts, and questions. Intended for science majors.
  • EBIO 3980 - Seminar: EBIO Honors Thesis
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2018 / Spring 2019
    Offers guidance to graduating Honors students during the process of thesis writing, evaluation and presentation of their research results and thesis defense. Thesis requirements and the role of the A&S Honors Council will be discussed. All graduating candidates will present a practice defense talk for peer feedback and will be expected to offer feedback to their peers. Recommended prerequisites: minimum 3.3 GPA and a declared EBIO major and approval by departmental honors committee.
  • EBIO 3990 - EBIO Honors Thesis Research
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019 / Fall 2019 / Spring 2021 / Fall 2021
    Provides an introduction to the departmental Honors program. Consists of individual library research on a potential Honors thesis topic under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Recommended prerequisites: minimum 3.2 GPA and approval by departmental honors committee.
  • EBIO 4360 - Lifestyle Medicine
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2023 / Fall 2024
    Student will self-select a semester-long personalized project for researching and learning about a topic they are passionate about in the context of the impact of environment and lifestyle on human health and wellbeing. Students will have continuous access to one-on-one instructor support and feedback, and credit will be given for completion of specific milestones throughout the semester. Same as EBIO 5360.
  • EBIO 4800 - Critical Thinking in Biology
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2020 / Spring 2021
    Lect. and discussion. Explores controversial issues, historical themes, or emerging developments in biology. Consult the EBIO Undergraduate Advising Center for current listings. May be repeated up to 15 total credit hours. Recommended prerequisite: minimum of 14 hours of EBIO course work. Same as EBIO 5800.
