research overview
- Plant Physiological Ecology: We comprehensively address the ecology, physiology, anatomy, and transcriptomics of plants. A unifying theme and focus of our studies are the mechanisms of how plants survive and are productive in different environments, including challenging environmental conditions on Earth and in space. We compare and contrast these characteristics among plant species with different growth patterns as well as anatomical/morphological and physiological features. We currently use the small, highly productive, and uniquely protein-rich plant duckweed as a model aquatic plant to design specific environmental conditions that maximize growth and nutritional quality, and minimize environmental footprint. We are currently developing duckweed as a novel food/energy system for multiple applications, including vertical farms and space flight.
