research overview

  • We seek to develop optical measurement tools that lead to new physical understanding and enable technological and scientific breakthroughs. A central theme is the development and use of optical frequency combs for quantum metrology. This includes topics in laser science and engineering, precision timing, optical clocks, astronomy, ultrafast lasers and nonlinear optics, nonlinear nano-photonics, microwave photonics, and spectroscopy from the UV to THz.

  • Quantum metrology, optical frequency combs and clocks, astronomical spectroscopy, microwave photonics, EM frequency synthesis

selected publications

courses taught

  • ECEN 4606 - Undergraduate Optics Laboratory
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2023 / Spring 2024
Introduces fundamental concepts, techniques, and technology of modern optical and photonic systems. Individual labs cover particular fields of optical technology, including light sources such as lasers and Leds, interferometers, fiber-optic communications, photodetection, spectrometers, and holography. Practical skills such as how to align an optical system will also be emphasized.
  • ECEN 5005 - Special Topics
    Primary Instructor - Fall 2022 / Fall 2023
Examines a special topic in Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering. May be repeated up to 9 total credit hours.
  • PHYS 4430 - Advanced Laboratory
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2019
Two lectures, one lab per week. Experiments introduce students to realities of the experimental physics so they gain a better understanding of theory and an appreciation of the vast amount of experimental work done in the physical sciences today. Same as PHYS 5430.
  • PHYS 4810 - Special Topics in Physics
    Primary Instructor - Spring 2021
Various topics not normally covered in the curriculum. Offered intermittently depending on student demand and availability of instructors. May be repeated up to 7 total credit hours.
